After the Mumbai Police, it’s now the turn of the country’s premier investigating agency to squirm.

A constable and a clerk of the Mumbai CBI’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) were arrested on November 7 for stealing original case papers from the cupboard of the investigating officer handling the case in which a bank was defrauded of Rs 1 crore. The case is on and the documents were to be used in the trial.

Nothing found at Nayak’s house

A special CBI court on Monday granted bail to the duo, attached to the CBI’s Kitab Mahal office in Fort. The constable, identified only by his last name, Tipe, was on deputation from the Mumbai Police.

The two first got a locksmith to make a key to the lock of the cupboard, said a source. When that failed, they broke it open and stole the case papers after office hours for the main suspect, who’s now absconding, the source added. It isn’t known how much the two were paid, or if the suspect got the papers.

The theft was noticed the very next day, and the staff were questioned. The EOW then filed a complaint with their own anti-corruption branch and the duo was arrested. Local CBI officials refused to comment. Senior officers, when contacted, directed all questions to their spokesperson in Delhi, Deputy Principal Information Officer D. Mohanty. DIG (EOW) in Mumbai, Virendra Singh, refused comment and Joint Director D. Shivanandan could not be reached despite several attempts.
