Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj may have criticised Meerut police for humiliating couples during its Operation Majnu on Monday, but some of her party colleagues and members of the Sangh Parivar have come out in support of the police.
“Sushma Swaraj does not know the ground realities here,” BJP MLA Satya Prakash Agarwal said. “If the operation is called off, the morale of the police will fall. Girls will start getting kidnapped,” he said.
Saying that Swaraj saw only side of the matter, the MLA added: “… police should take action against the culprits whosoever they are.”
Some Bajrang Dal activists and BJP Women’s Wing members tried to round up couples from Gandhi Bagh themselves.
Student leaders like Dr Raj Kumar Sangwan of the RLD and Sachin Tyagi of the Chatra Lok Dal have come out in the police’s support as have local lawyers Sudesh Tyagi and Sandeep Chaudhry.
While some people argue that the police’s method was wrong but not their intent, others, especially those who were rounded up by police, do not agree.
