The Army’s South-Western Command, which was finally approved by the Government on Monday, will be up and operational in three months, Army chief Gen J.J. Singh said today. The SW Command, proposed by the the Army last year to manage potential short duration wars along the Western border, includes a new 9 Corps, to be based at Mamun near Pathankot.

While command and control at the new SW Command will be operational in two-three months, it would be a year before it is formally established, Gen Singh said. The new command will have operational jurisdiction between Abohar-Fazilka in Punjab to Ranjitsingh Pura in the Jaisalmer-Bikaner sector.

‘‘The new Command will make our strategy along the Western border more sound. The government has now given us their clearance. We will now finalise a location for the headquarters, take a look at infrastructure, communications, land and connectivity and go ahead,’’ the new Chief added.
