Union Minister of State for Home I.D. Swami said today that the decision of the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government to not implement POTA in J-K will not weaken the fight against terrorism.

Speaking to mediapersons after attending a seminar on ‘‘Challenges of Global Terrorism: Emerging Issues, Policies, Strategies and Option’’ organised by Jammu University, Swami said POTA is a legal instrument given by the Centre to combat terrorism. ‘‘It is at the discretion of the states to implement it or not,’’ he said.

However, speaking at the function, former Punjab Police chief K.P.S. Gill criticised the J-K government’s decision to not implement POTA. Referring to the state government’s slogan that says good governance is the need of the hour to fight terrorism, Gill said: ‘‘People who talk of good governance themselves do not know how to govern.’’
