This is another sweet story turning sour. Several samples of Dairy Milk chocolate bars (25 g and 13 g) tested at Pune-based Public Health Laboratory (PHL) have been found to contain living worms. The samples were collected from a co-operative store in Akurdi by Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation officials. The tested samples had been manufactured at the Cadbury India plant in Talegaon. The PHL report stated, ‘‘the chocolates do not conform to the standards of milk chocolate and therefore are unfit for human consumption’’. The report says living grubs were present but does not specify what grub was found in the chocolates (grub could be the larva of an insect, especially a beetle, maggot or a small caterpillar).Acting on the report, the health authorities at PCMC have sought permission from the Joint Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration, Pune division, to initiate action against the shop owner, the distributor and the company authorities. The chocolates were collected from Indrayani Bazaar Co-operative Stores in Akurdi.Cadbury India Limited officials blamed the retailer for the contamination.
