To continue our discussion from last week, there are many other artificial sweeteners available in India apart from Aspartame. Saccharin has been used for over a hundred years. If used within the suggested daily dose it appears to be safe. It is about 400 times sweeter than regular sugar but has a slightly bitter aftertaste. It is used widely in beverages, medicines and cosmetics. One of the widely available brands is Sweet’Nlow.

Stevia is a shrub whose leaves have been used by the people of South America to sweeten their beverages. It is available in India marketed as the brand DrShugar. In the United States it is sold as a dietary supplement but has not been approved as a food additive.

But a word of advice for those trying to lose weight: Unless one is very careful, using artificial sweeteners does not automatically result in a reduced intake of calories. It is important that modified dietary and activity schedules remain the mainstay of the weight reduction plan.

One of the largest consumers of artificial sugars is the diabetic individual. It is quite often understood or assumed that diabetics are allowed to consume only those sweets that have been prepared using artificial sweeteners. This is not quite true. Actually it is the carbohydrates, both the simple and complex, which influence the blood sugar values. It is possible for a diabetic patient to follow a meal plan making an allowance for a sugar containing food item, provided the individuals intake of total carbohydrates and the kind of carbohydrates being imbibed are tracked.

Practising moderation in most matters connected with life is the key to a balanced mind and to healthy living. As long as we remember this principle – even regarding the use of artificail sweeteners, they can be a part of a well balanced nutritious diet.
