NEW DELHI, January 11: The locket and tabeez that the grandparents tied around the neck of the young ones weren’t, after all, plain superstition. They served another purpose: of applying light pressure on the upper chest overlying the thymus gland to improve its functioning.
According to leading acupressurists, even the traditional customs of wearing janeu, payal, rings, bangle or kara and piercing of ears and nose are all based on the principles of acupressure. “They are actually meant to put pressure on certain specific glands and nerves to activate their functioning,” they say.
The acupressure experts had gathered here from all over the country to participate in the week-long workshop on the ancient science, which is increasingly being used as an effective complimentary therapy to other systems of medicines. The workshop, which concluded here today, was jointly organised by the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI), Maheshwari Club and Mool Chand Hospital.
