NEW DELHI, July 24: A hospital that seems to be coping with the strike somewhat better than other hospitals is the Lala Ram Swaroop T.B. Hospital in Mehrauli. While the kitchens are closed, because of the importance of a proper diet for TB patients, food is being ordered from a nearby restaurant.

The hospital can accommodate 400 patients but has a current occupancy of around 200 patients. “Because of the strike some people have left the hospital,” admitted Director V.K. Arora. “We buy food packets from a sweet house in Yusuf Sarai and it actually works out cheaper for us than the cooking here.”

The diet consists of dal, rice, green vegetables and chapattis which provides around a total of 2500 to 2800 calories. In addition the hospital also supplies milk and bread to the patients. And the scheme seems to have worked. Patients generally say that the food has not suffered in quality. He denies that patients were being made to clean parts of their wards. “Following the strike we had told relatives of patients that they had to clean the toilet after the patient had used it. This is the best we can do to keep the place clean.”

He says that negotiations have been going on with the karamcharis. “We have so far tried to avoid recruiting people on a daily wage basis since that creates a conflict with the staff on strike. They also send a couple of karamcharis inside to clean up some wards for a few hours.”
