Tamil Nadu government today demanded a constitutional amendment to empower the states to determine the quantum of reservation in jobs and education for Backward Classes and other communities according to their requirements.
Unless the Constitution was amended, the state could not increase the quantum of reservation to Backward Classes (bcs) and others, state Backward Classes Welfare Minister S M Velusamy told the Assembly while replying to the debate on the demands of grants pertaining to his department.
At present, the state has 50 per cent reservation for BCS and Most Backward Classes and 19 per cent for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. — PTI
