MUMBAI, December 17: Two petrol tankers were once again the subject matter of some shocking revelations at the Gundewar Commission today. While the Mumbai police have gone on record saying that a State Reserve Police (SRP) platoon had opened fire on a rioting mob trying to set ablaze these tankers, a constable in his deposition on November 26 had said that he had not seen any tankers at the spot. A n SRP jawan, Nandkumar Avghade, said he fired at a person who was trying to set a tanker on fire on the morning of July 11, 1997.Avghade, replying to queries by counsel for the Congress, Advocate B A Desai, said: ``We parked our vehicle at about 500 feet away from the traffic signal near Kamraj Nagar. Two tankers were parked on the highway on the west at a distance of about 50 feet. Both tankers were parked on the road to Thane. When we reached near the tankers, the drivers were behind the steering wheel. A luxury bus was behind the two tankers. Fearing the mob, all drivers deserted their respective vehicles. The luxury bus was set on fire by the mob.''When asked when did he fire at the mob, Avghade replied: ``When I fired for the first time, the target was a person standing at a distance of about 50 feet away from me. That person was trying to climb the second tanker and was trying to set it on fire by pouring kerosene on it from a can.
