A sessions court in Delhi on Saturday granted bail to two Bangalore-based engineers who were arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police a fortnight back. Shaji Yusuf, an Intel employee, and his friend Mohammed Yaseen, who worked with IBM, were arrested for allegedly abducting Delhi doctor Madhumita Mishra after luring her over the internet.
“From her (Dr Madhumita Mishra) statement it is clear that during her stay with Mohammed Yaseen she was free to move and talk to anyone as she had a mobile phone and nowhere had she stated that either of the accused had confined her firstly in the house
The duo has been asked by the court to furnish personal bonds of Rs 25,000 each with a surety. They have also been asked to hand over their passports to the investigating officer within three days of their release. But Yaseen and Yusuf will have to wait for a while before they get free as their families failed to arrange the sureties on Saturday.
“From Dr Madhumita’s statement it is apparent that she developed interest in Islam on her own and in her anxiety to know more about the religion she came across Mohammed Yaseen through Internet with whom she developed some attachment. Yaseen, who asked her to convert to Islam, also told her, as she had stated, not to do the same unless and until she herself is personally convinced about her faith in Islam,” the court order further stated.
“I am happy. I have nothing else to say. Now I want to see my son as soon as possible,” Yusuf Kunju, Shaji’s father told The Sunday Express. “It is obvious that the case has been fabricated and my brother has been falsely implicated,” Yaseen’s brother Mohammed Yasser said.
The Special Cell had also booked Mohammed Yaseen and Shaji Yusuf for allegedly trying to extort Rs 10 lakh from Dr Mishra’s family. ACMM Kanwaljeet Arora observed, “Further for the purpose of extortion, the prosecution is relying on the statement of Dr Madhumita Mishra’s sister but it was recorded on the date when the accused were arrested.”
