Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal today assured that the Home Department will thoroughly examine the Jaiswal report which says police mishandled the Rs 3,500-crore fake-stamps case.

Speaking to The Indian Express about the case, Bhujbal said: ‘‘Additional Chief Secretary (Home) will go through the report and then seek the opinion of the Law and Judiciary Department before recommending any action.’’

A cautious Bhujbal said: ‘‘I cannot make any direct comment on the report since I have not read it. The Home Department will also have to see if the officers really damaged the case and if the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) was not invoked at a proper time.’’

Deputy Inspector General S.K. Jaiswal had submitted the report after conducting a probe into allegations made by then Pune Additional Police Commissioner S.M. Mushrif that some of his colleagues had attempted to sabotage the initial investigation into the fake stamps racket and made efforts to get the wife and daughter of the main accused Abdul Karim Telgi off the hook.

In his report submitted to the Home Department on March 28, Jaiswal recommended ‘‘appropriate action’’ against Mumbai Police Commissioner R.S. Sharma (who was Pune police commissioner at the time of the probe), then Joint Commissioner M.S. Maheshgauri and even Additional Commissioner S.M. Mushrif for ‘‘several acts of omission and commission’’ which included lack of timely action in applying provisions of the MCOCA Act.

When additional Chief Secretary (Home) U.K. Mukhopadhyay was contacted, he said he was examining the report. ‘‘I can’t tell you anything more than that at this juncture,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Sharma blamed ‘‘certain vested interests’’ for ‘‘deliberately’’ leaking the Jaiswal report to malign his image. Sharma said: ‘‘I cannot comment on the report as I have not seen it but it has been leaked deliberately by vested interests to malign my image.’’
