A massive drive to widen the roads in the city ahead of the India-ASEAN car rally has led to the demolition of a Hanuman temple, prompting the Viswa Hindu Parishad to call a 12-hour bandh in Guwahati tomorrow.

The Hanuman temple, which is said to be nearly 40 years old, was demolished by the Kamrup district authorities on Tuesday afternoon. Local VHP and BJP units say this was ‘‘unwarranted’’ and has hurt religious sentiments of the people. Though the temple was not located along the main route of the rally, officials say it had to be pulled down because it fell on the approach road to the Raj Bhawan and several foreign dignitaries were expected to use the Road when the rally opens on November 22.
