It was celebration time at 24 Akbar Road, the Congress headquarters, as party members and supporters went into a frenzy and danced with gay abandon to the beats of drums as news of the victory poured in. Amidst fireworks, distribution of sweets and enthusiastic cheering the mood was upbeat after the UPA Government secured the trust vote in Parliament.
Slogans in support of party heroes, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, were chanted with full gusto. Women party supporters turned up in large numbers to be a part of the celebrations, while young children in khadi marched with party flags held aloft. Supporters waved bouquets of flowers and garlands and paraded down the road in a procession till late in the evening.
“We were always sure we would win. Now it is proven, this calls for a big celebration,” said a party supporter amidst cheers and fireworks.
However, earlier in the day the Congress headquarters wore a deserted look with most party members waiting anxiously near the Parliament House for news updates on the session.
Even the security guards and other staff were seen relaxing as there were few members to attend to. “We are keeping a track and listening to the news. We are also getting news updates from media persons. Members and supporters are near the Parliament to hear what’s going on inside from the members who are participating in the debate,” a woman Congress worker had said in the morning while reading a newspaper. “All the action is happening there,” she added.
Members at the BJP office too spent the day away, nervously awaiting the vote. The scant workers present, however, affirmed that the BJP is in full- election mode.
