Tension continues unabated in Nandigram, CPM worker killed

A local CPI(M) committee member, Manas Mondal (44), was killed at Kalagachia village of Nandigram Block I on Monday. There was an exchange of heavy firing between CPI(M) cadres and Bhoomi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) workers at Bangabera, Thekhali, Satangabari and Rani Chowk, bordering Nandigram and Khejuri. The clash started around 10 am and continued for a few hours. Inspector General (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia confirmed that Mondal, a school teacher, was killed in the firing.

Asoke Bera, a local CPI(M) leader and Shabhapati of Nandigram block, alleged that BUPC supporters abducted Mohan Mandal, a CPI(M) supporter, in the evening.

Asoke Guria, a CPI(M) district committee member of Purba Midnapore, alleged that the police failed to bring the situation under control.

The CPI(M) leadership has called for a 12-hour bandh tomorrow at Khejuri to protest against the death of their party member.

Meanwhile, leader of the Opposition, Partha Chatterjee, visited Nandigram hospital, where three BUPC supporters were admitted with bullet injuries. He said the CPI(M) was upto its old tricks after a gap of two months to shift the attention from the ration scam and Rizwanur case.

Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said additional force had been deployed at Nandigram to tackle the situation.
