TRAL, Dec 17: There’s tension in south Kashmir after police fired on villagers protesting against the “mysterious” burning down of a 600-year-old Muslim shrine here last night. The shrine was gutted and thousands of villagers came out this morning to douse the flames.
Angry youths assaulted government officials and set police vehicles on fire. Police say that the fire does not appear to be linked to militant activity or sabotage. The ornate shrine housed relics belonging to Shah-e-Hamdan, an Iranian preacher who is said to have propagated Islam in Kashmir in 14 AD.
Shah-e-Hamdan is one of the most revered religious figures in Kashmir.
