Testing numbers

P.V. Indiresan8217;s article is well meant but his suggestion will not work because of the sheer number of candidates who apply for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology 8216;Testing a great institution8217;, IE, December 13. What Indiresan is suggesting would harden the two-tier schooling system which already exists in India. Entrance examinations thankfully provide a level playing field for students from diverse backgrounds and that8217;s the beauty of it. What should be done is to plug the loopholes where examination papers are leaked rather than question the enviable track record of the IIT/IIM/UPSC entrance system.

Heritage rules

The article 8216;Ancient village Dholavira gets Mr Fix-it Mahajan8217; IE, December 13 has shown a different face of this politician 8212; how he not only wins elections for the BJP, but also pitches in for a heritage cause.

American pie

This refers to your editorial 8216;Empire of spoils8217; December 12. It is to be remembered that the cost of Iraqi reconstruction is paid with the American taxpayer8217;s money. So it is entirely logical that the United States would pick and choose when it comes to deciding on countries eligible for bidding on the reconstruction work. There are certain countries such as Britain, Spain and Poland who are working with the US shoulder to shoulder and are shedding blood to bring normalcy and pave the way for reconstruction in Iraq. And there are others who have been opposed to the American action in Iraq from the very beginning. Hence the list of countries that have been deemed eligible to participate in the US taxpayer-paid reconstruction efforts in Iraq.

Papering the scam

Right at the start I had a gut feeling that the Telgi Stamp Scam must have been engineered by the politicians hand in glove with Abdul Karim Telgi 8216;Telgi taints Cong, Sena: 2 ex-CMs, 3 Ministers8217;, IE, December 13. The wry smile and the confidence aglow on Telgi8217;s face while moving around with the guards right and left, flashed on all TV news channels, indicated wide and stenchy ramifications of this debacle. It appears politicians are united for monetary gains, irrespective of the ways and means.

Liberalise this

Why do you need stamp vendors and why issue licenses? The government should simply make them freely available in post offices, banks, etc. I don8217;t understand this idea of issuing licences, etc.

For Amarinder

Congress President Sonia Gandhi would be taking the right decision if she backed Amarinder Singh in the current factional fight in the Punjab Congress 8216;Congress vs Congress8217;, IE, December 13. He is, after all, fighting to cleanse the state of corruption.
