It’s almost like the jigsaw pieces fitting into their slots. Kamalesh Sharma’s election as the Commonwealth Secretary General paved the way for a few new postings, a prominent being that of the Secretary General of SAARC. It is reliably learnt that Sheel Kant Sharma, India’s envoy at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, is tipped for the SAARC job, perhaps a reward for the frenetic diplomacy over the nuclear deal at the Agency. Yes, Shashi Tharoor’s bid for the UN Secretary General’s post did get all messed up, but the Indian Foreign Service is pleased that the Commonwealth and SAARC officers will be noted men from its stable. The cascading effect of Kamalesh Sharma’s election has resulted in India’s Ambassador to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukherjee being transferred as High Commissioner to London, while envoy in Kabul Rakesh Sood will move to Kathmandu. The vacancy in Kabul will be filled by Indian envoy in Geneva Jayant Prasad, whose place will now be taken by Disarmament Division head Hamid Ali Rao.
