India and Israel today inked a Rs 5,000 crore deal for the supply of three Phalcon advanced early warning system aircraft which will significantly increase the surveillance and scrambling capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The Phalcons, which mate avionics from Israel Aircraft Industries with Ilyushin aircraft — in the IAF’s case, the IL-76 — will be delivered within five years of advance payment being made.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said the deal was signed in New Delhi by C R Mahapatra, Joint Secretary (Air), and top officials

of the Israeli Defence Ministry.
