LUDHIANA, MARCH 8: Apart from a closed door meeting under the leadership of Bhai Ranjit Singh at Gurdwara Alamgir on March 12, a public meeting to be attended by members of Singh Sabhas and Sikh organisations will be held to consider the insult to the Akal Takht by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

This was stated by senior vice-president of the Akali Dal and SGPC member Surjan Singh Thekedar after he issued an appeal to all Singh Sabhas and Sikh jathebandis to attend the meeting. He said the issue of illegal’ meetings of the SGPC, summoned at the behest of the CM, will also be taken up.

The March 14 meeting of the executive committee at Jind will prepare a policy programme for the March 22 SGPC meeting called by Tohra, he said, and added that the entire programme for the SGPC tercentenary programme will also be taken up on March 14.

He said he will not attend the sarkari’ SGPC meeting on March 16. “It is illegal and they have no power to call such a meeting,” he said. “Never has a government in this state interfered with the functioning of the SGPC. Neither Kairon, nor Beant Singh, not even Zail Singh during the Emergency took recourse to what Badal is doing.”

“Indira Gandhi bombed the Akal Takht building but Badal is using the power of the state to damage the very institution of the Akal Takht. Badal has reached where he has with the backing of the community but now he is sowing thorns for his own family,” Thekedar added.

Lambasting the charges that the Tohra faction was sowing the seeds of return of terrorism to the state, he said: “If terrorism returns, it will be because of Badal. He has all the boys’ under his control in jail. How can Bhai Ranjit Singh or Gurcharan Singh Tohra give a boost to terrorism,” he asked.
