With monsoon officially still active, till September 15, Dehradun has emerged as the wettest capital amongst the state capitals of the country. It has beaten Mumbai, Kolkata, Shillong and Agartala to take the top position.
This year from June 1 to August 29, Dehradun has received a rainfall of 2082 mm. Total rainfall received by Mumbai stands at 1981 mm, closely followed by Shillong with 1533 mm for the same period.
It was after a gap of nine years that Doon Valley has received maximum precipitation. In 1998, Dehradun had received 2022 mm rain during the three active months of June, July and August. Earlier, it was in 1966 that the Valley had received 2576 mm rain during the same period. “In the recorded data kept since 1868, maximum rainfall during June 1 to August 31 in Dehradun was 2630 mm in 1971,” said Anand Sharma, Director of the Metrological Department.
Compared to Dehradun, most state capitals in the country have received only one fourth of the rainfall this monsoon season. While neighbouring Shimla received only 772 mm rain, Chandigarh recorded 586 mm with Lucknow trailing behind at 485 mm. New Delhi has received only 527 mm rain in the past three months.
This year, maximum rainfall was received in the month of August in Dehradun. Till August 29, Dehradun has already received 1108 mm rain. “It could still go up with the system still active in the region,” said Sharma.
