Three die in road accidents

Dense fog in the city on Monday led to three accidents, resulting in the death of three people, including an accountant with the Ministry of Finance.

The police officials said in the first accident in the Janakpuri area of west district, accountant Yaspal Chabra (55) was on morning walk at around 7 am when on Punkha Road in Jivan Park an unidentified biker hit him from behind.

After a bystander informed the police, he was rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital where he succumbed to a severe head injury. A resident of Indra Park in Uttam Nagar, Chabra is survived by two sons.

In the second incident, one person was killed and another injured when their bike rammed into a stationary truck in Paschim Vihar area of west district.

The police officials said Satish (26) was going to Paschim Vihar from Sultanpuri with his younger brother Rajiv alias Sonu (22). On the outer ring road near the main Peeragarhi Chowk, unable to spot a stationary truck in the middle of the road due to dense fog, Satish rammed the bike into it.

The two were rushed to Balaji Action Hospital with severe injuries. Satish was declared brought dead; Rajiv is undergoing treatment. The police have arrested the truck driver, Manoj Kumar, for rash and negligent driving.

In the third accident, a cyclist was crushed to death by an unidentified vehicle in Rohini area of outer district. At around 9:15 pm below the Rithala Metro Station in Rohini area, Ram Prasaad (26) was going home after work when an unknown vehicle ran over him.

Prasaad, a labourer from Bihar, is survived by his wife and one son. He lived in Sector 24, Rohini.

Methanol truck overturns at India Gate, 1 dead
A truck carrying a tanker containing highly combustible Methanol overturned at the India Gate roundabout and caught fire on Sunday night, leading to the death of the driver.

Titu Singh (25) was charred to death when the overspeeding truck burst into flames after it crashed into a road divider near the Bikaner House, the police officials said. The incident was reported at 12.08 am when the truck carrying Methanol (mixture of methane and diesel) was taking a turn at the India Gate roundabout.

“Two police vehicles arrived on the spot and cordoned off the road from the Pandara Road entry till the Shahjahan Road,” said a senior police officer. “Four fire tenders rushed to the spot from the Connaught Place Fire Station.”

The police said the fuel inside the truck leaked to the other side of the road into Bikaner House adjacent, causing an immediate fire. The 20-foot flames even licked a few tree branches inside Bikaner House.

The helper, who jumped out of the truck, is recovering in Hospital.
