OCTOBER 27: The State Criminal Investigating Department today registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two students from Sophia college in connection to the death of their college mate, Indu Anto, on August 4, 1998.

One of the college students, Melisha, was arrested on October 24 and released on interim bail. She had obtained an anticipatory bail, according to CID sources.

“We are trying to seek police custody of these girls. They have been asked to report to the CID office regularly”, said a senior CID official.

Indu Anto, a first year junior college student of Sophia College, had died following a fall from the two-storeyed building of her college hostel late at night. The case had received wide media attention following allegations by Indu’s father, C L Anto, that his daughter had died due to ragging by the inmates of the college hostel. The girl, at the time of her death, was found to have been inflicted with injuries which were a few days old.

The Gamdevi police had closed the case in December 1998, concluding it to be a case of suicide. In May, this year, the Bombay High Court, in response to a petition filed by Indu’s father had directed a fresh probe by the state CID in the matter.

Earlier, in April, the court had also directed the police to interrogate Indu’s roommates who were mentioned in a diary maintained by Indu.

The next hearing of the case would come up on November 7.
