Reacting to news of large-scale violent protests in Lhasa, the External Affairs Ministry on Saturday said India was distressed over the situation in Tibet. “We are distressed over the deaths of innocent people and the unsettled situation in Lhasa,” a ministry spokesperson said.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters in Chandigarh that India was keeping a close watch over the situation in Tibet. His statement came following reports from Beijing confirming that at least 10 people have died in anti-China protests in Lhasa.

“We hope

that all those involved will work to improve the situation in Tibet, which is an autonomous region of China, through meaningful dialogue and non-violent means,” the spokesperson said.
