Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore became the third shooter, and the 11th Indian, to qualify for the Athens Olympics when he won a bronze in the double-trap event at the World Championships in Cyprus on Tuesday. Here’s a checklist of who’s made it so far, and who’s on the waiting list:
MADE IT
DOLA BANERJEE, WOMEN’S TEAM (ARCHERY)
Banerjee became first Indian archer to make it to an Olympics when she finished in top ten at the world meet in July. She also made it to team event, with Reena Kumari and Chekrovolu Swuro
SATYADEV PRASAD, TARUNDEEP RAI, MEN’S TEAM (ARCHERY)
Prasad and Rai followed Dola, and with Ved Kumar made the team event
SUSHIL KUMAR & SUJEET MANN
Neither won anything at the World Wrestling Championships last week but did enough to get to Athens
ANJALI VEDPATHAK
A sure-shot qualifier, she could be in for a medal if she’s consistent
ABHINAV BINDRA
Like Anjali, qualified for his second consecutive Olympics when he won bronze at the Munich World Cup in June
ONE STEP AWAY
ANJU BOBBY GEORGE & NEELAM JASWANT SINGH
Anju’s world championship medal doesn’t count toward the Olympics. Her journey, and Neelam’s, to Athens starts with the Asian Track & Field meet in Manila. Qualification for both will depend on the marks set by the IAAF
WEIGHTLIFTERS
Qualifiers are in Vancouver in November; points earned by the country will decide number of players who will make it. Quota slots also available at the Asian Championships in Kazakhstan in April
MEN’S HOCKEY TEAM
Qualifiers in Madrid in March. India need to finish among top six to be sure of a berth
MOHAMMED ALI QAMAR, JITENDER KUMAR
First chance comes at qualifying tournament in Manila in January; medal-winners in lower weight categories and top two in the higher weight categories qualify automatically. Next, meets in China and Pakistan (dates unspecified)
THE MEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM
Fifth spot at Asian meet gets them place in qualifiers in Japan later this year
