Two brothers of Indian origin were mauled by a 350-pound tigress that killed their teenage friend in a San Francisco zoo earlier this week.

Amritpal “Paul” Dhaliwal (19) and Kulbir Dhaliwal (23) were in stable condition and recovering in hospital after the Tuesday attack in the zoo. Their names were not released until Thursday.

Police said the tigress first attacked Kulbir. His brother Amritpal and their friend Carlos Sousa Jr yelled, following which the animal released him and attacked Sousa.

The brothers ran but the tigress following the blood trail caught up with them 300 yards away and mauled them before it was shot dead.

Four police officers who arrived to help the brothers saw the four-year-old tigress sitting near one of the victims and they opened fire after distracting it and as it leapt towards them. San Francisco Chronicle quoted chief of surgery Dr William Schecter as saying he is optimistic the two would make a full recovery, but that they would likely remain hospitalised for days.
