HEADY STUFF…Mahindra Tractors defender Walter Liu (No 3) tries to ward off a threat posed by Tiipu Sultan’s Atique (9), Shadab (7) and Kushal Gurung (8).

June 27: Tipu Sultan eked out a slender but deserving victory over Mahindra Tractors in the WIFA Senior Division football league at the Cooperage, this evening.

Kushal Gurung’s header in the 35th minute produced the only goal of the match and it punished an error by goalkeeper Abrar Ansari who left his line while negotiating a free-kick on the left flank by Ayaz.

Gurung connected to send in a loping ball that dipped in as a frantic Ansari attempted to make ground.

The goal, however, reflected the edge that Tipu Sultan enjoyed in the match and it brought them 13 points from six matches including four wins.

Mahindra Tractors, a promoted side, remain on six from as many matches and might reflect on a point that slipped away with a late chance that went abegging.

Mushthaq on Tipu Sultan’s left flank was a handful for Tractors and his frequent controlled runs had the deep defenders back-pedalling. Standing firm, though, was Walter Lui whose timely interceptions and tackles kept Tipu Sultan’s forays at bay.

Lui stepped in to stifle two dangerous sorties organised by substitute Ritchie, coming in for Nilesh, and Mushthaq that could well have swelled the lead midway through the second half.

Mahindra Tractors, far from being subdued, challenged Tipu Sultan’s superiority in the second half and Gilbert in goal wasn’t exactly idle.

A powerful shot from close by Tabrej Sayyad had Tipu Sultan’s custodian stretching out to collect after Amol Khaire floated into the area.

As the seconds ticked away, Ajit Kokate’s volley from the left edge of the area drifted across the face of the goal, denying Tractors a last-gasp equaliser.
