Chennai, Nov 8: The political affairs committee of Tamil Maanila Congress, which is meeting at the residence of party president G K Moopanar here tomorrow is expected to take a crucial decision on the party’s continuance or otherwise in the DMK-led coalition government in Pondicherry.

Although the TMC had severed its ties with the DMK in the last Lok Sabha election, it is still a partner in the Janakiraman-led ministry in the Union territory. The TMC has six members in the 30-member territorial Assembly, while the DMK and the Congress have eight members each.

Senior TMC leader P Chidambaram told reporters here that the developments in Pondicherry would figure in tomorrow’s PAC meeting. If the TMC decides to pull out, the DMK-led government would automatically be reduced to a minority and fall.

Moopanar had held two rounds of talks with party MLAs and office-bearers in the Union Territory. The AIADMK, which has invited the TMC to join the Progressive Democratic Front’s anti-government agitations, has said it would cooperate with the Congress and the TMC if they wanted to form an alternative government in Pondicherry.

Tamil Nadu Congress president Tindivanam K Ramamurthy and AICC secretary Mani Shankar Aiyer had also called on Moopanar here last week. They are believed to have discussed the Pondicherry developments with Moopanar. Senior Congress leaders from Pondicherry met Moopanar separately earlier.

The PAC will also take a decision on AIADMK leader J Jayalalitha’s invitation to the TMC to join the Progressive Democratic Front in fighting against the “anti-democratic” policies of the Centre and the state governments.

Moopanar had told Jayalalitha the issue required wider consultation with the party and its allies. The TMC did not join the November 4 agitation led by Jayalalitha.

Rajiv not same as Beant, Dhanu — Chidambaram
Chennai: TMC leader P Chidambaram today said that comparing the inclusion of Rajiv Gandhi’s name in the CBI chargesheet in the Bofors case with the cases involving Indira Gandhi’s and Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins was “absolutely obnoxious”. He said the inclusion of the name of Beant Singh in the Indira Gandhi assassination case and Dhanu’s name in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case could not be equated with the Bofors case as Beant and Dhanu figured in the respective chargesheets as those involved in the crime, whereas “there is not a whisper that Rajiv Gandhi had received money even in the final report given by the CBI”.

The final CBI chargesheet did not present evidence to indicate that either politicians or public servants had received bribes and the inclusion of Rajiv’s name was “legally unjustifiable”, he said.
