CHENNAI, DEC 6: The Tamil Maanila Congress on Sunday demanded that both the Central and state governments give up their “anti-people policies” that had led to steep rise in prices of diesel, transport and essential commodities.

short article insert In continuation of the discussions held on Saturday by the office-bearers of the party, the extended TMC executive council met on Sunday at Satyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai. The day-long session, in which about 250 party leaders and functionaries participated, was chaired by party president G K Moopanar.

In a resolution, the party recalled the circumstances under which the party was born in 1996 and vowed that the party would continue to uphold the values of probity in public life, efficiency and integrity in administration.

Referring to the issue of detention of fishermen from Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram districts in Pakistan following a cyclonic storm, the TMC called for immediate action by the Government so as to reunite the fishermen with their families.

On bogus votingduring the recently held Lok Sabha elections, the TMC was of the view that if identity cards were issued to all the voters, the impersonation problem could be solved to a large extent.

Instead of viewing the Orissa cyclone as a natural disaster, the Centre should declare the cyclone as a national calamity and extend all possible relief measures on a war footing to that state, the TMC executive stated.

In a reference to those who underwent teacher training in Tamil Nadu in the years 1991-96, the TMC demanded that the state government should initiate steps to validate and recognise the training courses for the purpose of gainful employment.

Yet another resolution urged the state government to fill up the vacancies of doctors in the health centres across the state to render minimum health care to the disadvantaged sections of the society.

President’s visit

  • CHENNAI: President K R Narayanan’s four-day visit to the city, scheduled to begin on Monday, has been postponed, official sourcessaid. The reason for the postponement was not known.
  • The new programme of his visit would be intimated later. The President also regretted the inconvenience caused to all those concerned, who had organised various functions, the sources said.
