CHENNAI, Aug 10: Shiromani Akali Dal leader Surjit Singh Barnala today called on Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G K Moopanar and sought the latter’s support in the election for the post of Vice-President.
Barnala, a former Governor of Tamil Nadu, on arriving in the city on Saturday morning , went first to Moopanar’s house.
On being told that he was attending a TMC meeting at Kamaraj Hall to mark the launching of the Quit India Movement in 1942, Barnala arrived at the venue of the function where a Poets’ Meet was on. On hearing that Barnala had come to meet him, Moopanar left the dais and rushed to the Trust office nearby to greet Barnala.
They are understood to have held discussions for about ten minutes.
While wishing Barnala all the best in his campaign for the Vice-President’s post, Moopanar is understood to have politely hinted to the Akali Dal leader of the TMC MPs’ and MLAs’ inability to support his candidature as the United Front (UF) has already taken a collective decision to back Krishan Kant.
