Traffic flow into Karnataka from Tamil Nadu was stopped from afternoon today and in some border areas since last night as a precautionary measure in the wake of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal giving its final award in Delhi today.

Security has also been tightened along the delta districts, including Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruchy, Perambalur and Pudukkottai. But according to reports reaching here, many farmers in Thanjavur, the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, have been in joyous mood greeting news of the Tribunal’s final award by bursting crackers.

Director General of Police D Mukherjee said large numbers of police personnel, led by DIGs and SPs had been posted in the border areas falling within the districts of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode and Ooty. “We will take a decision about resuming vehicular flow tomorrow after assessing the situation in Karnataka,” he said.

Krishnagiri district, which borders Karnataka at three points, including Bangalore, Kolar district and Chamraj Nagar, has taken extra precautions.
