The Maharashtra government has set aside norms to allow the speedy reconstruction of a building at Zaveri Bazaar which was badly damaged in the August 25 blasts.

The decision was announced by Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today after the residents of Nav Nidhan Bhavan called on him to discuss their problems.

The facade of the building was severely damaged. Two of the residents died in the blast which occurred a few metres away from the structure.

The authorities have made the residents vacate the building. Shinde said the building’s owner will be given immediate permission to reconstruct it. If he is not ready, permission will be granted to its 18 tenants as a special case, he added.

The residents of the building have moved to temporary accommodations while the shopowners have had to close down their shops. The tenants told the CM that they wanted to reconstruct the building as soon as possible.

The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary Ajit Nimbalkar and Municipal Commissioner K.C. Srivastava.
