AMRITSAR, DEC 19: Having been pushed to the wall by the pro-Badal camp in the ongoing Akali crisis, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Gurcharan Singh Tohra has decided “to keep quiet” in accordance with the wishes of Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh.

Tohra maintained a studied silence on the feud in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) while Chief Minister and SAD president Parkash Singh Badal called on Ram Singh, head of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha, at his residence for about an hour here on Friday.

Badal’s meeting with Ram Singh assumes significance due to the latter’s proximity and ideological relationship with Akal Takht Jathedar Ranjit Singh. It is understood that Badal had approached Ram Singh to seek tactical support from the Jathedar in his ongoing war with the SGPC chief. An appeal by Ranjit Singh to Badal and Tohra to observe a truce till April 13, 1999, is understood to have given a reprieve to Tohra.
