SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who was admitted to Escorts Heart and Super Speciality Institute here today after he suffered two heart attacks in quick succession, is on life support system.

Tohra, 80, who had a bypass surgery done in December 2002, spent considerable time at the kar sewa site at the Golden Temple today, and the exertion proved to be too much for him. SGPC general secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta said that soon after the kar sewa, Tohra felt a shooting pain in his chest. ‘‘We took him to Guru Ram Das Hospital where the doctors advised us to shift him to Escorts. On the way, he suffered another heart attack.’’ Medical Superintendent at Escorts Hospital, Dr H.P. Singh said ‘‘Tohra’s condition is not very good.’’ He added that a team of Escorts doctors from Delhi is flying down to Amritsar late tonight to find out if he needs to be shifted to Delhi.

Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has told SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal that the government will provide an aircaft to shift Tohra to Delhi, if the need arises.
