BANGALORE, July 28: Heaps of tomatoes have been left to rot by farmers as the sale of the commodity would not even fetch the transportation charges. Such is the situation as tomato prices fall sharply, with one kg of tomato costing just 50 paise in the wholesale market here. The prices are expected to rise only after the commencement of the festival season next month, according to officials in the state horticulture department. Meanwhile, the Hopcoms (Horticulture Producers Co-op Marketing Society) is helping farmers by paying a slightly higher price (Rs 1.20 a kg) for the commodity.
