Top seeds from both the men’s and women’s categories were today shocked in the 69th senior national table tennis championships being held in Siliguri.

Washed out in the team events, the Railwaymen seem to be catching up with their Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) counterparts in the open category.

Three Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) players made the men’s semi-finals, veteran Sourav Chakraborty even dislodging top-seeded Subhajit Saha in a closely contested match, according to information received here. RSPB’s Sourav won 14-12, 12-10, 7-11, 13-11, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6.

A Sharath Kamal, the only PSPB player in the last four, beat Sanil Shetty of Maharastra A 11-7, 11-5, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8. Others to advance were A Amal Raj and Sayan Paul Roy.

PSPB’s women’s top seed too wasn’t spared on a day of upsets, with RSPB’s Anindita Chakrabory getting the better of national champion Mouma Das in a five-setter. Delhi girl Neha Aggarwal, of PSPB, also advanced to the semis with an easy 11-2, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 victory.
