WASHINGTON, July 15: Luke Smith now knows he belongs on the ATP Tour. The 20-year-old Australian won his ATP debut here yesterday, outlasting India’s Mahesh Bhupathi 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (9/7) in a first-round match at the $675,000 Washington Classic.

Smith, the United States college singles and doubles champion at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, served 11 aces and saved eight of nine break points to win in one hour and 50 minutes in hot conditions.

“It felt like I had 10 or 15 break points and he managed to escape every one,” Bhupathi said. “He played well on the big points.”

Bhupathi has paired up with American Tommy Ho in doubles.
