The Pakistan cricket team have asked for a delay in the start of the first Test against South Africa, due to kick off at the Wanderers here tomorrow, after two key players were mugged, South African cricket boss Ali Bacher said late today.

Bacher, managing director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB), told reporters he would have to discuss the request to postpone the start “for maybe one day, two days" with members of the Board as the implications are "quite substantial." Pakistan management said that injuries suffered by strike bowler Mohammed Akram and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq in the attack had left the team with only 10 fit players from its squad of 15, and with only three bowlers.

“We have an exceptional set of circumstances now prevailing,” a worried-looking Bacher said after holding talks with Pakistan’s team management at their hotel. “This must be unique in the history of world cricket.”
