Shapath is a study of the human psyche. The writer has imbued his characters with many traits — breaking away from the typical Bollywood two-dimensional characters. The drug lord, Chaurasia (Kader Khan) is a man with a conscience. When he is approached by Rajeshwar (Gulshan Grover) with a scheme to smuggle arms and ammunition, he refuses. Since Chaurasia has the patronage of a minister R J Bahadur (Raza Murad), Rajeshwar can’t do much.
So, he decides to kill Bahadur whose security in-charge is Arjun
(Mithun Chakraborty, in desperate need of a hair cut). Though Arjun manages to do his duty once, Rajeshwar finally succeeds. And besides losing his job, Arjun discovers his sweetheart was a plant by Rajeshwar to distract him. Then, Arjun, in a complete volte face, joins Chaurasia and becomes a compulsive killer. Rajeshwar succeeds in making India a terrorist country. Bahadur’s replacement D D Sharma (Rami Reddy) whose daughter Kavita (Ramaiya) is a police officer. Her colleague is Kishan (Jackie Shroff), an honest cop who simply hates criminals — instead of arresting them he kills them. Will Arjun ever cut his hair? Will Kishan ever get to kill Rajeshwar? Will the heroines stop revealing sagging mid-riffs? No. But watch Shapath only if you like Mithunda. Otherwise, give it a miss.
