NEW DELHI, AUG 18: The Government may probe the alleged "improper treatment" given to Union Power Minister P R Kumaramangalam in a private hospital here as a result of which his condition worsened and he was now battling for life, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan told the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Sharing members’ concern over Kumaramangalam’s condition, Mahajan said he would bring the matter to the notice of the Health Minister so that a probe could be initiated into whether there was any lapse on the part of the private hospital where he was first treated.

"However, our first priority is to provide best treatment to Kumaramangalam," he said.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, senior BJP member Madan Lal Khurana urged the Government to constitute a high-level committee to probe "improper treatment" given to the Power Minister in Apollo Hospital.

Khurana said the Apollo Hospital, where Kumaramangalam was admitted for over a fortnight, failed to even diagnose the disease and first treated him for malaria and later for tuberculosis.

Now it had been detected by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences that he was suffering from "blood cancer", Khurana said, adding his condition would not have deteriorated if the private hospital had properly treated him.

Alleging that the attitude of the hospital had been "callous", he said it was only interested in minting money.

Citing an example, Khurana said a cousin of a Punjabnister was admitted to the private hospital where he died for want of "proper treatment".

On top of it, the hospital handed over the body to hisrelatives only after they paid a huge amount of Rs. 20 lakh as bill for treatment, he said.

As Chief Minister of Delhi, Khurana recalled that thegovernment had given land to the hospital at a subsidised rate and extended other facilities.

It was agreed that the hospital would provide freetreatment to poor patients but it was not keeping its word, he said.
