Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the informal ceasefire with the National Democratic Front of Bodoland had come into effect and it was now the Centre’s duty to draw up the modalities for talks with the group.

He also promised safe passage to NDFB militants who would constitute the negotiating team. The government would also release from jail any top leader the outfit wanted to name for the talks, the CM added.

‘‘While it is for the Union Home Ministry to prepare the ground rules for the ceasefire and the modalities for talks with the NDFB, we have directed security forces to restrain operations against the group,’’ the CM told a press conference here today.

NDFB leaders currently in jails include vice-president Dhiren Boro, general secretary B. Swmkhwr alias Gobinda Basumatary, finance secretary Nileswar Basumatary, armed wing dy commander-in-chief Bijoy Boro and central headquarters in-charge B. Udang alias K.R. Brahma. Publicity secretary B. Irakdao has been reported missing since the Bhutan operations in 2003.
