MUMBAI, March 12: Left-handed batsman Saurav Ganguly was adjudged the Tata Sports Club’s most outstanding sportsperson for the year.

The chairman of the Tata group of companies, Ratan Tata, presented the award to the Bengal captain at a glittering function held at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) on Wednesday night.

Veteran left-arm spinner Padmakar Shivalkar, who served the Tata Sports Club for thirty years, was conferred the lifetime achievement award. He was also handed a cheque of Rs 51,000.

A unique feature of the event was the presence of past and present greats of Indian sport, most of whom owe their allegiance to the TSC. The club’s roll of honour includes 32 Olympians, nine world champions, 41 Asian Games medal winners and eight Commonwealth Games medal winners, eight Padma Shrees and also 28 Arjuna award winners.
