PATIALA, JAN 21: Mystery surrounds the death of Veenu, alias Milan Singh, a young stage singer, who was found dead in her bed at the residence of a ward attendant of the local Mata Kaushalaya Hospital here yesterday morning.

According to Superintendent of Police Gurpreet Singh Gill, 28-year-old Veenu was a singer with an orchestra group and used to perform at marriage parties. Though she belonged to Ludhiana, she developed proximity with a ward attendant of the Mata Kaushalaya Hospital and used to stay with her frequently after her stage performances. She was also said to be quite friendly with the daughter of the ward attendant.

short article insert Gill told Newsline that on Tuesday night, Veenu returned to the ward attendant’s house on the hospital premises. She was said to be under the influence of liquor. She fell unconscious and was taken to a private nursing home near the hospital. She was brought back to the house and the family she was staying with looked after her for sometime before retiring for the night. In the morning, the ward attendant found her lying dead in her bed.

He said that Veenu was a divorcee and had separated from her husband about seven to eight years ago. She had no issue and was used to drinking. She was reportedly disowned by the members of her family. Her mother, a widow, resides in Ludhiana. Her brother, Ramesh Kumar from Ludhiana, and her brother-in-law, Keemati Lal from Yamunanagar, came last evening after they were informed about Veenu’s death.

A post-mortem was performed at the Government Rajindra Hospital here today. According to sources, the cause of the death is suspected to be poisoning and the viscera has been sent to the chemical laboratory for examination.

Veenu used to sing in different voices and was thus nicknamed Milan Singh. She was said to be fairly good-looking and was generally dressed in jeans and jacket. She looked much younger for her age, sources said. The family of the ward attendant could not be contacted.
