A tribal and his four-year-old daughter were crushed to death near Jharsuguda in Orissa on Wednesday by a bus after the conductor reportedly pushed them out for not having Rs 2 for tickets, police said on Thursday.

The conductor has been arrested. Sanschar Toppo, 40, and his daughter had boarded the bus at Talpatia near Jharsuguda and were going to their home in Sundergarh. Toppo, however, had only Rs 8 instead of the Rs 10 required for the fare. The conductor got into an argument with him, and later reportedly pushed the two out of the moving bus.

After the incident, angry passengers set the bus on fire and blocked the state highway for hours. The state Government, which has ordered Rs 1 lakh compensation to Toppo’s family, has now promised to make registration of bus drivers, conductors and cleaners mandatory before issuing route permits for buses.
