CHANDIGARH, Feb 15: A group of miscreants beat up several students of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) late last night and also damaged vehicles and broke window panes of the college hostels.

A final-year students reportedly fractured his arm and another got a deep cut in his elbow in the attack. Police said more than 10 persons, armed with iron rods and hockey sticks, stormed the PEC campus around midnight and started damaging the vehicles parked there. They came in a Gypsy and walked down from Gate no 1.

They then reportedly went to the Himalaya and Kurukshetra hostels and starting smashing the vehicles parked around. Whosoever tried to resist was abused and beaten up. The miscreants also broke the window panes of the hostel. PEC principal Prof Rajnish Prakash said the miscreants’ intention was more of terrorising the students who were studying. He said the campus normally remains open for everybody and only one chowkidar is deployed for each hostel.

He added that it was difficult to say who all were behind the attack but the students did pick up their names as they accosted each other. On the complaint by PEC principal, the police have registered a case for rioting armed with deadly weapon, trespass, injuring and damaging property.
