The United Arab Emirates is set to adopt a series of labour reforms for foreign employees, which will benefit some 1.5 million Indians working there. India and UAE have also put in place a six-member joint working group for looking into the problems of the workers.
The measures to be taken up, include penalty for employers who confiscate passports of their foreign workers, appointment of more labour officers and providing simplified facilities for the workers to register their complaints with the Government.
India has been taking up labour-related issues with the UAE in a bid to improve the conditions of the Indian workers. Ali bin Abdulla Al Kaabi, the UAE Labour Minister had a detailed discussion with Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi.
A decision to appoint a six-member joint committee was also taken at the meeting. Both the countries will have three members each in the panel.
The first meeting of the committee is expected to be held in Dubai next month.
