The much-awaited change of guard in the Shiv Sena did not happen today. However, the grapevine has it that Sena chief Bal Thackeray may hand over the party throne to son and heir-apparent Uddhav tomorrow. But, for now the Sena is keeping it a closely guarded secret as they held deliberations in the cool climes of Mahabaleshwar.
The conclave will also see party elections in compliance with EC orders.
Despite ill-health, Thackeray’s attendance at the two-day conclave has fuelled talk about his intention to step down as party chief. However, he may be re-elected and may continue only as a figure-head. He may also have the final say on policy matters. Both Uddhav and Raj are expected to be given important party assignments to curb factionalism.
The media has been barred from attending the conclave. The delegates — MLAs, MPs, mayors, frontal organisation heads, zila parishad presidents and special invitees — have been told not to take along supporters.
Thackeray has banned delegates from using cellphones during the conclave. Sources said he has announced strict action against anyone who leaks information to the media. Though he did not address the delegates on the first day, the other speakers emphasised the need for strengthening the organisation and adhering to a strict disciplinary code.
