Dismissing the banned outfit ULFA as ‘‘irrelevant’’, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S.K. Sinha has said negotiation is the only way to solve the insurgency problem in the country.Inaugurating the historic Kanai Boroshi Bowa Sil here, Sinha said the ULFA should now focus on issues related to development of the state. He said though the outfit was earlier accepted by the people but is now totally rejected after the Independence Day blast in Dhemaji last year, which killed several schoolchildren.Sinha, a former Assam governor, said the leaders of the outfit were enjoying five-star comfort while the cadre were left to fend for themselves. Commenting on the ULFA being mentioned in the terrorist organisation list by the US, Sinha said neighbouring Bangladesh, which is allegedly harbouring the ultras, will now find the situation difficult.Meanwhile, the outfit has said its inclusion in the list was a ploy to attach a ‘‘terror tag’’ to it. ‘‘.It is another attempt by vested interests to put the terror tag on the outfit,’’ ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said in an e-mail to the local media in Guwahati on Sunday.Commenting on the ongoing efforts to bring the outfit to the talks table, the ULFA chief said the Centre was ‘‘desperate’’ for talks in view of next year’s Assembly elections. ‘‘The ulfa, however, is still hopeful of talks to resolve their demands but this will not be under the framework of the Indian constitution,’’ said Rajkhowa, regarded a softliner in contrast to commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah. He alleged that the Centre was not at all serious in finding a solution.
