GUWAHATI, July 18: A United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) secret plot to assassinate Lt General R K Sawhney, General-Officer-Commanding fourth corps, based at Tezpur, has shocked the police here, apart from the army itself.The conspiracy, which failed to take off, has come to light following the arrest of a hard-core militant Krishnakanta Hazarika alias Elvis in connection with the attempt on the life of Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta here last month.Hazarika, who was trapped by the police at Tezpur a fortnight ago, revealed during interrogation how he had worked out a plan to eliminate Lt General Sawhney by planting a bomb at his official residence. The arrested militant told the police that he was instructed by the ULFA higher ups to draw schemes to target several important persons.
