MUMBAI, MAY 22: Chairpersons to eight Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) committees have been elected. The newly elected chairpersons, who have already assumed office, are Sunita G Rajhwani (public works), Jonita N Matai (town planning), Dhananjay Borade (education), Narain Punjabi (sanitation and public health), Yamuna Sonawane (women and child welfare), Jai Prakash Bhatia (water supply), Ram Parwani (sports – social and cultural) and Bhim B More (slum eradication). Meanwhile, the next general body meeting is likely to discuss municipal secretary Prakash Kukreja’s request for relieving him of his duties. A majority of corporators want Deputy Municipal Commissioner Chandrakant Mane from the Kalyan Municipal Corporation to replace him.
UMC Commissioner Capt Suresh Shool paid surprise visits to offices of the sanitary inspectors, and detected numerous irregularities in the muster rules maintained by them. A section of the sanitation staff was found to be missing from their assigned duties. Sources attribute Shool’s surprise visits to an attempt at ensuring that garbage heaps are removed daily from the city by the sanitation staff.
